The wedding formalities take place first in a registry office on Ocean Island (now Banaba, part of the Republic of Kiribati). Elmer's father, Victor Anton Johansen, is recorded on the certificate as a "manufacturer".
This is followed by a ceremony at the Sacred Heart Mission. Numerous telegrams from well-wishers are received at the Gilbert and Ellis Islands Colony post office.
