I started to put together a collection using elements because I planned a joint art show and publication with the theme of exploration. Expansion a species instinct and other life forms also have this predilection. We live in an era when the possibilities of knowledge beyond our round locale have opened up in a way they hadn’t seemed to evidence since the 1960s. Simultaneously acquisitive aggression by regressive states is as much a pressing issue as it was in the 1930s.

Machines and numbers define our lives but we pretend that we are in control. Machines are basically devices powered artificially that contain rules and depend on numbers to operate. Machines have no imagination. But our relationship with machines is of long standing. Despite the fact that engineering only became a university subject late in the 19th C machines have been designed and made by people, especially in northern Europe, for hundreds of years. Our historical event horizon is the 19th C however so we never interrogate what it means to be truly human, because humans invent and humans make and humans as Yoav Hariri says use language in order to organise so that these activities can be carried out successfully. Our survival depends on it, but we are no longer in control. The machines are taking over.

People are angry. They don’t know why. The government is stupefied. At some point the whole edifice is going to fall over. They’ll bring in the tanks. Or someone will invade like at the end of ‘Hamlet’. The government for its part is cynically pretending to care about people and then spending their money to make them prioritise its goals. Jesus. How much more perverse can you get. We’re approaching the critical point of inflection. It’s happening faster in other countries but each country is distinct and separate.
